Improvement of PVD Coating Adhesion on Laser Engraved Dies

Summary

New challenges have arisen from the recent trend in die production towards laser engraving and frosting technology. Studies and trials have been done with the introduction of novel Linear Ion Source technology into the coating system to improve the adhesion of the PVD coating without compromising the dies’ highly detailed surface finish. Field testing has shown that coating adhesion / die life and coin quality can be maintained when this approach is undertaken by mints using laser technology

Dr. Sun is an active scientist in both the areas of Metallurgical Materials & Plasma Surface Engineering for more than 30 years. He became Technical Director of Teer Coatings Ltd 2019 after previously working for the company for 20 years.  Has authored multiple publications and has also managed 20 major grant funded R&D, projects from both the UK and EU.
